CHAPTER 17
Ms Audre
It was early morning when Xavier tapped on the second floor door, close to where the east and west wings of Griswold converged. At first there was no response, but eventually after a few timid knocks he heard someone walking towards the door inside the room. He held his breath and looked up the corridor, fearful a teacher or prefect might spot him and Gabe.
When a smiling Ms Audre opened the door, he relaxed. She pulled a lemon, silk dressing gown about her shoulders. ‘Hello, boys. How may I help you?’
‘Can we speak with you privately, please? It’s urgent.’
She ushered them into the room and closed the door. Her room was scented with lavender and adorned with colourful posters, a vase of irises and a bright rug. Books, cushions and a throw were scattered over a small blue couch. She had even dared to hang curtains over the window. No wonder they wanted to get rid of her. She was so different to the other teachers.
‘We’re here to warn you. You’re in great danger. They’re going to take you on Friday.’ Xavier knew he was speaking too quickly, but he couldn’t help it.
‘Slow down, take it easy.’
Xavier took a deep breath and began again, ‘We had to come here to warn you. Some of the teachers are plotting to get rid of you. You’ll go missing just like Matron and Dr Magin.’
She seemed puzzled. ‘I don’t understand.’
‘We overheard Ug ..., I mean Mr Kennedy, in the library. He’s going to come after you for the event and lock you in the dungeon.’
‘What event, Xavier?’ she asked in a patient tone.
‘The teachers were talking about it. It’s happening on Friday evening. I know they’re evil.’
‘Perhaps you got the wrong message or misheard them somehow.’ She looked at him as though she were trying to absorb what he was saying while weighing up whether he was joking or crazy.
‘No, I’m certain. You have to believe me, Ms Audre,’ he pleaded.
‘I’ll keep an eye out for them. You’d be surprised, Xavier. I’m actually very capable of looking after myself.’
‘It’s true. You have to believe us,’ Gabe said. ‘We can help you today, but you must come to the library at lunchtime, otherwise you’ll miss the chance. And then ... we won’t be able to help you.’
‘I’ll give it some thought.’ She opened the door. ‘Now you must forgive me, boys because I need to get ready for classes and you need to go to breakfast.’
She gave them a smile and a gentle push into the corridor before closing the door.
